ANTON SHELEPOV

Violinist Anton Shelepov’s multifaceted career has gained him praise from critics: “His technical skill, combined with his superb gift of musical interpretation, was dazzling” (The Flint Journal), “Shelepov, the compact powerhouse whose fiddle floated and soared… got his shining hour (42 minutes, to be exact) at Friday night’s Masterworks concert…” (Lansing City Pulse). A native Siberian, Shelepov began playing violin at the age of four and went on to earn a master’s degree and a doctorate in Violin Performance from St. Petersburg Conservatory and Michigan State University, respectively. He is a winner in various international competitions including the 1999 Garth Chamber Music (St.Petersburg, Russia), 2000 Tadeusz Wronski Solo Violin (Warsaw, Poland), 2008 William Byrd Young Artist (Flint, Michigan), and 2008 MSU Concerto Competition (Lansing, Michigan), and has received the prestigious David Oistrakh Award from Rostropovich’s “Slava” International Foundation.

As soloist, Shelepov has appeared in both Americas, Europe, and Russia, with orchestras including Flint, Livonia, Rapids, Lansing, West Virginia Symphonies, Blue Lake Festival, St. Petersburg Mozarteum, and Kremlin Chamber Orchestras. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with prominent composers of our time, including Rodion Shchedrin, Augusta Read Thomas, John Corigliano, and Peter Dyson—whose works he premiered in Russia and the United States. As a founding member of Krasni String Quartet, he has recorded four CDs for the British OLYMPIA label.

A devoted educator, Shelepov has been a faculty member of the West Virginia State University and enjoyed performing innovative outreach programs for thousands of kids nationwide annually as a member of the Montclaire String Quartet in Residence the seven years.

Shelepov joined the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra in September 2016. He also serves as concertmaster of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, in Charleston, West Virginia, and spends his summers as a member of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra in upstate New York. Previous concertmaster appointments include Lansing Symphony, Livonia Symphony, and Blue Lake Festival Orchestra, as well as guest concertmaster performances with the Louisville Orchestra, Eastern Festival Orchestra, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (Canada). He has regularly performed with the Detroit and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras, working under the batons of distinguished conductors including Manfred Honeck, Leonard Slatkin, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Peter Oundjian.

Shelepov, his wife Irina (also a violinist), and their three sons live in Cary.
