I know I'm always curious about things and always have a lot of questions. Do you?
Send me any questions you have about me or the Symphony or music and I'd be happy to answer you right here on this page!
Send me an email at sympson@ncsymphony.org and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
RECENT QUESTIONS WE RECEIVED:
Do you play an instrument? Which one? Emma, Age 8
I’ve actually tried all of them. I have trouble with some of them, like the tuba. It is just too big for me! My favorites are the flute and the piccolo because they sound the most like birds, but I’m best at violin. The bow gives me problems sometimes, but I can pluck the strings with my beak!
Do you go to school? Ellie, Age 8
Well, not exactly. Birds don’t have the kinds of schools that people do. But I am learning about music every day from the North Carolina Symphony!!
Is that a magic wand in your hand? Tyler, Age 4
That is my baton! Orchestra conductors use a baton to help the musicians follow the beat of the music. That way, everyone is playing together. A long time ago, conductors used a big staff—a kind of stick that was almost as tall as they were. One conductor accidentally put the staff right through his foot! Ouch! The baton is much safer.
What is a piccolo? Grace, Age 8
Oh I love the piccolo. The orchestra has four families of instruments: strings, brass, percussion and woodwinds. The piccolo belongs to the woodwind family and it looks like a small flute. In fact, in Italian, the word “piccolo” means “small!” Piccolos can be made of wood or metal and they make a very high, bright sound—in fact, the piccolo can sound a lot like me when I sing! Here is a photo of the North Carolina Symphony’s piccolo player Beth Lunsford with her piccolo!
Why is your name Sympson? Peter, Age 5
My parents named me that because I LOVE the Symphony. You know Symphony, Sympson!
What kind of bird are you? Hollyann, Age 9
Thanks for asking. I am a genuine North Carolina Eastern Bluebird. If you are interested in finding out more about Bluebirds, check this great website!
What is your favorite candy bar? Mallorie, Age 2
Chocolate-covered sunflower seeds!
