Antonín Dvořák came to America with a challenge to create a national music. Within two years, he wrote the most celebrated symphony ever composed on American soil, the "New World" Symphony.


In collaboration with author, scholar and Guggenheim fellow Joseph Horowitz, the North Carolina Symphony presents an exciting week of cross-disciplinary events and multimedia concerts that will take you inside Dvořák's earliest impressions of the United States. Engaging talks and expansive live performances will combine music, art and literature on stage to shed new light on the social issues that affected Dvořák on his arrival and the artistic inspiration alive in the country that led him to bring American-born melodies into the concert hall for the very first time.

By offering these events to diverse audiences of music lovers and first-time listeners, school groups, university students, teachers, church and community groups and individuals from across the state, we present a unique opportunity to examine how our culture reflects our society, and tackle issues of race, immigration, urbanization and national identity that resonate in the American experience to this day.

Headlining the celebration are full-orchestra performances in each community of the multimedia concert program "Dvořák and America," an unparalleled exploration of Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World," through video, theatrical readings, rare musical selections from across American history and more.



"Dvořák and America" is conducted by Music Director Grant Llewellyn, hosted by broadcast legend David Hartman, with performances by actor/baritone Kevin Deas. Written and produced by Joseph Horowitz, with video by Peter Bogdanoff (not pictured).
